Selamawit Tesema

Selam grew up in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia. She lived in New Delhi, India prior to immigrating to the US at the age of 16. She received her BS in biochemistry from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She completed her medical education at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and was grateful to continue her training there as an Internal medicine-pediatrics physician. During her childhood, Selam was a witness to disparities in health, education and resources between the global north and the global south. This experience fostered a desire to pursue a career in medicine so she may be able to care for underserved and vulnerable communities in the world. Selam currently leads a group of residents in creating and delivering health education sessions for the refugee community in Memphis, TN. She has also been involved in the development of a partnership between UTHSC and Levy Mwanawasa Medical University in Zambia. She currently is helping to lead a virtual global health classroom as well as a journal club between medical students and trainees at both of the sites. She is looking forward to continuing her global health work as a HEAL rotating fellow.
