Our work in California

More than 11 million Californians live in Health Professional Shortage Areas where there are insufficient numbers of healthcare providers to meet patient needs. In these regions, existing providers are often overburdened, leading to high rates of burnout and turnover, which further destabilize care delivery.
In partnership with local health leaders, HEAL built the California HEAL Program to improve healthcare retention and make meaningful improvements in healthcare access and quality through fellow-led community health projects, cross-sector collaboration, and leadership development. The program connects two types of fellows—Social Medicine Fellows (primary care physicians) and Community Fellows (health professionals already embedded in their communities)—to build a peer network grounded in shared commitment and real-world collaboration. Together, they strengthen California’s healthcare system from within.

Growing up in California’s underserved high desert, Dr. Milo Dover saw firsthand how easy it was for families to fall through the cracks of a fragmented healthcare system. In medical school, Milo set out to start to close those gaps, but couldn’t do it alone. Then he found his village at HEAL, so he didn’t have to.

“I probably would have quit if it weren’t for HEAL,” Dr. Viet Nguyen admits. She now oversees efforts that have diverted more than 14,000 people over 10 years from returning to jail into mental health and housing programs. She wouldn’t have had the leadership skills or community support to sustain this work without her time as a HEAL Fellow.
